I like Byrd in this fight as he is more of a slick boxer than Oquendo. However, with this fight possibly going to the scorecards, I think a hedge is in order.

Take Byrd by Dec and hedge with Oquendo to win. Oquendo does posses a little pop, so it's best to play it safe.

Good Luck!!!

If Fres beats Byrd I will stop handicapping fight permanently. There is absolutely no reason to hedge, Fres is fuking horrible. I'm betting at least 5 grand on this fight to win 1 grand unless I can find better odds. Byrd might even knock him out.

I feel that Byrd will respect Oquendo for the little power that he does have. And remember, Oquendo likes to stay on his toes in the ring. So I think this will be a matchup where both guys try to outbox eachother.

i see b.f.`s point....i was thinking along the same lines....the only thing that scares me is that oquendo has gotten awfully tired late in his recent fights....he was fading badly against maurice harris before landing the big shot....and should have beaten tua pretty easily if his stamina didn`t fail him.....

scares me that he might run out of gas and get stopped by byrd.....even though byrd`s not a puncher, per se,punch volume(numerous clean shots) might cause a stoppage.....

i think that byrd by decision prop was around -160 at oly.....very reasonable....better than laying 5-1....

i can see hedging....just hoping that oquendo`s cardio is up to snuff.....

g.l. guys....

Oquendo vs Byrd
Fres Oquendo vs Chris Byrd
Chris Byrd by Decision (-160) [pending]

i hadn`t checked back on this recently.....that sucker jumped.....glad i hit it early.....looking at a potential hedge.....don`t think it`s probable for oquendo to outpoint byrd....could he get stopped....or get lucky and stop byrd?....

something to think about....

Based on the information at boxrec, Byrd has a 74" reach while Oquendo has an 80" reach. That should help to offset many of the advantages Byrd has as a slick southpaw. Maybe he can keep Byrd at bay for much of the fight.

In reference to Oquendo possibly tiring over the 12 rounds:

That is possible for both guys. Byrd is not exactly Mr. Olympian type material. I believe Oquendo tired as he did in the Tua fight due to a major adrenaline rush. Who wouldn't experience this while in the ring against David Tua. His adrenaline was high coupled with the fact that Oquendo had to jab non-stop every round to keep Tua at a distance.

Now, when Oquendo fought Mo Harris it was Harris who eventually tired and got KO'd in the 10th round.

So I believe that Oquendo should be able to go the distance in this one. He should be hungry enough because he stands to become the IBF heavyweight champion of the world if victorious. And should he win, he will attract large paydays as I am sure everyone will get in line to fight him. He has all the incentive in the world to be in his best shape.

I still don't think he will win. I am just making a case for the distance.

I never said that he did not get tired. I was just implying that Harris became more tired than Oquendo. I do recall Harris dropping his guard in the late rounds and being caught with a shot that put him in a defensive mode leading to Oquendo's rabbit punch and KO.

dude what are the freakin odd the match ends in a draw? I never watch boxing but I've never seen a match end in a draw, either. I think I might remember one time watching Sportscenter and hearing about a draw, but that's it !

Go stick your dong in a chicken, Oren... I was simply pointing out that the draw is +3300... other sportsbooks have it at +1750. Duh!

There are some good odds there.

Shit, those are very good odds. If you ask me this IS a distance fight that could havea lot of close rounds early. I expect Byrd to win the late rounds but a draw is not a bad bet at all for this fight.

After further analysis, I have decided that although Byrd by Dec is a good bet, the absolute hedge is the following: Fight Goes The Distance hedged with Byrd by KO. The best odds are at Pinnacle.

I can't stress enough that if you want to be successful betting on boxing, DO NOT RELY ON BOUTS CONSIDERED TO BE HIGH PROFILE.

In this fight, you had Fres Oquendo, who has somewhat of a reputation for being a dirty fighter, who had climbed the rankings fighting B level fighters (Etienne and Harris to name a few), and who did not seem to be anywhere near the caliber of a fighter as Byrd entering the fight.

On the other hand, you have the highly touted Chris Byrd, who has been in there with the some of the best in the division ( both Klitschkos, Ibeabuchi, and Holyfield to name a few), who holds the IBF Heavyweight title, and who is known best for his slick style of boxing which has baffled opponents into defeat. This all made Byrd a huge betting favorite coming into this fight.

Historically, bad decisions have been rendered when such disparities exist between the profiles of the fighters.

I am not saying that it is right, but this has been the history in many cases.

I did not lean towards either fighter to win because I knew that Oquendo was dangerous. He did surprise me with his ability to outland Byrd in the bout.

But the moral of the story is: If the seemingly much lesser opponent allows the fight to go to the scorecards and does not totally dominate throughout the fight, there is a great chance that he may get robbed. Especially when a title is at stake.

My tip to anyone who likes to bet on boxing and win consistently is to look for mismatches. Look for matchups where one guy has power and better boxing skills than his opponent. You will provide yourself with a greater than 50% chance of winning this way. I know it is easier said than done, but it is the way to win in my opinion.

In addition, always take advantage of propositions when they become available. They usually surface for the title fights or high profile fights. This is one way to avoid becoming a victim of the politics in boxing. If you have a really good feeling that someone will not be KO'd, then bet on it. The scorecards will have no bearing whatsoever on this type of wager. Fight Goes The Distance hedged with Byrd by KO, in essence was Not Oquendo by KO.
